President Alvi asks the ECP chairman to choose a suitable poll date
President Alvi |
President Dr. Arif Alvi on Wednesday transferred a letter to
Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja. He invited him to a meeting
to fix a date for general choices in the country. The letter is being sent at the
same time as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) decided to assume a new
delineation of seats by the account. Which effectively states that general
elections cannot be led within 90 days of the ending of the legislature.
The National Assembly of Pakistan was dissolved precociously
on August 9 and the naturally quested time for choices in this case is 90 days.
Composition 224 of the Constitution states that the ECP shall hold general
decisions within 90 days of the dissolution of the assemblies. Meanwhile,
Section 17( 2) of the Choices Act reads, Following the formal publication of
each narrative, the commission will define its constituents. The electoral
authority defended its decision to pursue delimitation in a verdict issued
earlier this month by claiming that the process was essential to maintain
openness.

"The Commission holds and determines that carrying out
new constituency delineation based on last antedating information officially
published in 2023 is obligatory requirement of law as contained in section
l7(2) of the Choices Act, 20l7, before the previous General Election to ensure
the success of duty under Composition 2l8(3) of the Constitution and for the
true representation to the electorate, political parties, and questioning
campaigners to cover their absentee ballots,"
The chairman stated in the letter that the National Assembly
was dissolved on August 20, 2023, at the Prime Minister's recommendation. As
required by Article 48(5) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of
Pakistan, he added, Because the General Election of the Assembly must be held
no later than 90 days after the date of dissolution, the President is required
to choose a date.
